Woodworking Essentials – April (Women & LGBTQIA+)

Event Date:

April 4, 2022

Event Time:

6:00 pm

Event Location:

The Dapper Hammer

Yes, you can build, too!! Whether you are completely new to tools, or have been DIY’ing home projects for years, this is the class for you!

This 4 class series is a safe, supportive environment for you to be fully you as you explore new tools, learn new skills, and inspire yourself and others with your imagination. This series will introduce you to all the skills and tools you will need to be successful at building DIY home projects.

We will chat about shop safety, try our hand at a variety of tools, and work on an individual project, which you will take home at the end of class.

IS THIS CLASS FOR ME?

This series is designed for absolute beginners with little to no tool knowledge as well as for those who have some experience and want to learn more. For those of you that have attended a Carpentry 101 class at The Dapper Hammer, this 4 class series will review, dive in, and build on the topics and skills we covered.

What I found in teaching Carpentry 101 was that a one time two hour class wasn’t quite enough time for everyone to get through their project, and without fail, whether folks came as absolute beginners or with some experience already, everyone wanted more! More time to learn the tools, more time to work on their projects, and more time to explore different methods of doing things.

This series was born out of those classes and allows us to cover the basics and devote more time to each skill and dig deeper into all the questions people wanted to know more about. I designed this series with both the absolute beginner in mind, as well as someone that has been through Carpentry 101 already. I think it will be a great experience for everyone!

Class 1: Selecting Materials & Planning Your Project

-What type of wood should I use? Where should I get it?
-How do I know which boards are best?
-What to consider when planning your project?
-How to measure and mark for for accuracy
-Saws 101: Miter Saw, Hand Saw, Circular Saw, Jig Saw

Class 2: Drill Skills

-When to use screws vs nails
-Choosing the size & type of screws to use
-Drill Bits & Drivers: What are they and how to change them
-Clamps, clamps, clamps
-Dell’s miscellaneous & helpful tips

Class 3: Pocket Hole Joinery (aka The Kreg Jig Class)

-How to join and build almost anything with a drill and this simple tool.
-This is how I started building 10+ years ago, and is still a method and skill I use regularly.
-How to join parallel boards (ie table top)
-How to join perpendicular boards (boards at 90 degrees)
-Working with Angles
-How to join different thicknesses of wood

Class 4: Finishing Your Piece

-Sanding Grits & Methods
-Paint vs Stain vs Oil
-Foodsafe Considerations
-Interior vs Exterior Protective Coats

NOTE:

Bring your drill! One of the questions I receive the most is how to use a drill properly and effectively. The best way to get comfortable with your drill is to learn and practice with it. If you have a drill at home, please bring it (and any batteries/bits/drivers) to class and we’ll explore it together! Please note: if you do not have access to a drill, we have several available for you to use in the shop.
